The Sky's the Limit

The sun starts to set as the girl walks outside. She wears a long dress that flows in the wind; a forest green to mint green ombré. On her neck, she wears a crescent moon necklace that sparkles, on her ears stars that jingle, but she’s barefoot. She sits down in the sweet-smelling grass and watches as darkness envelopes the land. As stars glitter in the sky, her friends begin to arrive; slowly, slowly.

No one can be late tonight.

When the moon is at its peak in the sky, light falls gracefully in front of her.

“Come on,” she calls excitedly, and she begins to climb the glowing stairs. Her friends follow her, laughing as they take that first, tentative step on the translucent staircase.

She stops when the moon is before her, and she can feel him smile and wink. Clouds unfold before her to form a pure white dance floor. The group runs out to dance seemingly by themselves. Because who needs a partner when you can dance with the stars?

A beautiful orchestra composed of the planets begins to play. The music fills the air until she feels like she could reach out and grab it. Food fit for Kings appear on long tables, and they each eat their fill. Deserts in every flavor, texture, size, and sweetness are nibbled- or gobbled- throughout the night. Each song is sweeter than the last, and they sway dreamily. Every guest is given a crown; some made of metaphorical poems, some winking comedies, others suspense-ridden fictions, and everything in between.

They laugh and talk before the time finally comes for the girl to sing. The orchestra stops and the moon turns his luminescent stream onto her. She begins to sing the most beautiful song she can think of, the words spilling from her mouth seamlessly. Every word and note is conjured from her very soul. The orchestra joins her in a beautiful crescendo as the song flys from her mouth. The lyrics spark all around her, popping in bursts of color. When the singing stops after the last, drawn-out note, the stars clap in an airy way and her friends congratulate her.

The party continues long into the late, gleaming night and early, laughing morning. The clouds slowly lower them to the ground that still glistens with dew. She jumps lightly to the ground behind her companions. They bid each other goodbye as the sun begins to rise, and the guests walk back to their homes, replaying the melodious night in their heads. The girl turns behind her to see the most beautiful part of the morning- the moonset.

“Goodbye, dear friend. Thank you for an amazing night,” she whispers.

“You’re welcome, my darling,” he replies.

“‘Till we meet again.”
