To be a Child Again

rain

rain

so much rain

pounding on the walls

overpowering the sermon

as soon as service is over

the little amount of children at

church

bolt for the door

they stick their heads under the

drain pipe

soaking their hair

they run against the river that

flows from the drain pipe

the parking lot is flooded

perfect for kicking and

splashing

the ditches have flooded up to

their knees

perfect to sit in and splash

they drop a toy into the spout

of a pipe

and watch it float down the

stream

the waterflow from the pipes

on the roof

are beautiful twisting and

turning

and they take a second to look

before running out to play

whenever theres lightning

they run and they scream

hiding under a roof

only to run back out once its

gone

their shoes are soaked

as well as their clothes

the youngest runs through the

parking lot

in her princess ballerina dress

yelling “freedom” and dancing

they are constantly yelling

and laughing

and splashing

their mother comes out

to tell them to stop

“youll get ringworm” she says

before one of them begins to

sing

“ring worm ring worm ring

“around the wo-orm”

to the tune of ring

around the rosey

their mother pulls up the car

and the children climb in

soaking their seats

one cut his foot

and dropped his shoe in a

puddle

another left her shoes

outside

near the ditch

the third sits in the back

his hair and clothes completely

soaked

as the oldest tries

to get the youngest

in her car seat

she thinks

“how nice it is to be

“a child

“again”
